Read our primer articles on High Mileage Oil, Synthetic Oil and Kinematic Viscosity

Take a look at these photos of the Nissan cam lobe and follower used for the Sequence IVA testing . Thats some ugly scuff IMO.

The topic is about the photos of the components that " passed " API SL-GF-3 , not failed though.

difference in pass and fail click me

I know valve train components are being engineered lighter and lighter along with lower spring pressure but i always thought another engine even tougher to protect ought to be used for this testing sequence . Looks apparent it was tough enough for the SL GF-3 oils so , so much for thinking Razz

Geeze 120 average max for GF-3
90 average max for GF-4

26 seems a nice number to try for

Speaking for myself , the part in the photograph that passed and others like it would get tossed during a engine rebuild if was Motorbike was doing it. I might change my mind if the part was in-hand for inspection .

I believe just about no-detectable wear in this test can be achieved with the right formulation. The Valvoline result was 20

Really? hmm the one that passed looked good to me but I've never torn down an engine. Big Grin

Motorbike, what oils are you running these days? I'm about to dump the M1 unless XOM responds. Not holding my breath. I need my car to last. Now more than ever. I'm actually think of running Synpower.

I'd love to see the results of all the other oils on the market.

High temperature deposits. Very few oils meet it and in fact one company is making a separate oil just for this spec.

Mobil 1 scored a 5.3 mg on the TEOST test and even compared to the new Bio Syn oils it did extremely well.

Valvoline Synpower 5w30 now meets GM 4718M but not HTO-06. Won't be approved for that until later this year I was told.

Pennzoil Platinum seems to have all their bases covered meeting HTO-06 and passes the Seq IVA wear test. Big Grin

The Castrol Edge is really here in the USA and on the labels of the 5w-30 - 10w-30 here it says the oil meets API SM , GM4178 along with other misc specs and also says it is guaranteed to go an extended drain interval of 15000 miles or 1 year - which ever comes first .

Take that Valvoline ! Big Grin

We have the 5w-30 Edge running in a friends +160 mile per day Toyota that has a developed trend at 5-6 month intervals with 3 different oils now . We'll see how it stacks up .

I still use Synergyn and it does well for me but i have not bought any oil for several years and running low on supply so i'm open to other oils --- just not Valvoline. In europe they sell pao oils , here in the USA group III IIRC.

I wish the new 0w's from Redline did not use moly - or at least use the type in their motorcycle oils .

Have you seen the hip new Klotz 0w's ? One that Klotz has could possibly work well in the FSI engines . Don't tell anyone though cause then they might ask ----- why ? Razz
