If you are only looking at a couple applications, the filter manufacturer's websites typically have cross reference if you type in a Motorcraft number at Wix, for example, they will give you the Wix number. Motorcraft will tell you what filter per the automobile and engine and I suspect the other auto companies do the same. More work, but you probably can get what you need.
I know that purolator and fram will mail you one if you call them. You'll have to dig through their websites for the phone number.

One of my friends bought a case of wix filters and got the wix catalog from the supplier. I lost the link but will ask the next time I see him.

You can also check the local quickee lube places to see if they have extra catalogs.

Also, try the yellow pages for wholesale filter/filtration suppliers. You'd be surprised on what you can get free.
