I am currently working on improving the sampling methods currently used and also to develop a better overall method which guarantees reliable and consistent sampling of HP and LP systems across the board. I have experienced my share of misfit systems and disastrous programs so with that being said please find the questions below:


  1. What current methods are used to ensure sampling bottles conform to ISO 3722? Are they cleaned via a third party or by yourselves to meet the standards.
  2. What is the minimum quantity of sample required to complete an effective sample to analysed?
  3. Does differing oil type require different quantity ratios? e.g. transformer oil samples compared to gearbox.
  4. Do all samples require to be taken hot to obtain a correct sample? 
  5. Is there common issues that samples have which can be identified as being a poor sample taken by an operator. e.g. oil containing particles or water which could be incorrect drain off before sampling.
  6. Is there basic information which could be useful to the analysis such as temperature at which sample is taken.
  7. what sample bottles are most suited for sampling? opaque or clear, volume and size of neck.

Any assistance is much appreciated.

Good morning,

(1) YES, ISO 3722 is used to ensure the cleanliness of the sample bottle. Mostly to get the clean bottle, which certified for ISO 3722, we purchase it from vendor. And it is very few cases only. Normally we just used our clean bottle (even not certified) to use for sampling. To get the best sample, we always flush the sampling line, and sample bottle first, prior to take the sample. This practice will eliminate (reduce) the undesired issue of bottle cleanliness

(2) The minimum quantity of sample is depend on the oil parameter to be tested. Mostly 200 mL is enough for regular oil analysis check.

(3) Hmm, We may said it YES. Because the oil test parameter required for Steam Turbine Oil Analysis may different with Diesel Engine Oil. Then it will affecting the quantity of sample required.

(4) YES

(5) YES, It can be. So... to avoid any disturbances, we need to flush the sampling line for about 5 times of the dead zone volume

(6) From my point of view, if the oil test done at field, YES the operating temperature need to be recorded. But if the test is done in the lab, I still not getting the need to put sampling temperature in sample label.

(7) I recommend to use transparent bottle (hard and thick PET is better). Size about 200 mL, and the neck is suitable with your Hand Pump.

Hi Omolabake,

20 ppm from my point of view is not so high.
It may come from the HFO due to purity issue.

Even so, you may need to compare it with the previous result also. To analyze the trend.
