In our lab we have a Laser Net Fines machine and one of our customers needs particle count on their diesel engine oil. The oil is too dark for us to test on this machine. What would be an opption ?

The LNF software allows for sample dilution. You click on the dilution button and enter the ratio. You may find any sample with more than 3 or 4% soot causes processing problems. You can try diluting the oil with a clean solvent or white / light coloured oil. The diluent should have a count that is significantly lower than what you would expect from your sample. Solvent wise you could use filtered white spirits or kerosene. Just be aware that as the viscosity of the fluid going though the LNF drops it tends to use a lot more sample.

In addition to what Paul added, in case the oil is too dark, the best way is to use the Pore Blockage technique, it follows a British standard, I believe BS3406.

2. When we talk about NAS 1638 class 6 ,what is it mean? Is it the biggest class in any size range ?
