Hello everyone,

A very interesting case study

http://www.practicingoilanalysis.com/article_detail.asp...ookgroup=OilAnalysis

I have a question: when we conduct a pentane and toluene insoluble test (ASTM D 893- find attached) do we get only Soot% (as given in case) or all insoluble. Basically I want to know what elements (soot, wear metal etc.) consist of pentane and toluene insolubles.

Hi Mohit

The pentane insoluble indicates the organic oxides derived from additive degradation, oil degradation etc.while toluene insoluble indicate wear metals, soot and dust particles.

So it is a mixture of all of the above mentioned substances. So the difference between pentane insoluble and toluene insoluble are not an indicative of soot only. The dust particles really means silica content. So when %of toluene insoluble increases, you must send the sample for wear metal analysis also.
