why are we adding only phosphorous as an additive in gear oil?
what is the property that phosphorous give?
and why are Ca,Mg,P,Zn Added to engine oils?
Could any one help on this?

In gear oils the phosphorous is present as a Sulphur Phosporous EP (extreme pressure) additive. This forms an adherent surface film that transforms to a ductile metal soap under a high load/contact temperature.
Mg, Ca and Zn in engine oils are there as detergency/dispersancy additives to deal with the effects of combustion byproducts i.e. mainly soot. Because there is no combustion happening in a gear system these are not needed. Hope this helps.

Zn is in lubricants in the form of ZDDP and shows up in oil analysis in ratio roughly 1:1 of
Zn and P.
This additive performs 2 fuctions, namely antioxidant and antiwear.
