Read our primer articles on Oil Analysis and Tribology

I'm have not seen the paticular article your talking about, however I would think a small medical pump could work. There are certain applications where sampling from an oil sump can become difficult. In a situation where drop tube sampling is not an option and the sump can not be retro-fit with mini mess sample port, we use our filtration cart to provide a sample from the sump. We have placed a sample port before the filters on our cart. After hooking up to a gearbox we allow the oil to cycle through the lines just long enough to push any oil from a previous gearbox out. Once the new oil has filled the lines we have a (pre-filter)sample. This may not be the most efficient way to sample (dragging a bulky filter cart around can sometimes by a job in itself) but at this point we are assuming we will need to filter the sump anyway, based off of previous trend info.
