hello friends,

i am facing a big problem in our plants cooling tower fan gearbox.the detail of gearbox is mentioned below.

Cooling tower make: Paharpur
G.B.Detail:
Input RPM: 1440
Out Put: 240
Temp : 90 Deg Cent Max
Oil Capacity: 40 Ltr
Oil used: Parafinn Base oil hydrulic oil SAE 40
problem: after filling this oil within 8 month service time we found the oil level goes down b'coz of that gearbox failure. during investingation we found the oil level goes doen and at the time of of drain the qty of oil was on 25 ltr.and there was a heavy sludge found in G.B. the colour of Sludge was black and the bearing of input shaft and top end bearing was failure due to lake of lubrication. there was no oil leakage in G.B. we have already Analise the oil and we found the water content leave in oil is 750 ppm.we are facing same problem in other gearboxes.

kindly guide me what is the reason for this problem?

I agree with the comments made above. Most cooling tower gearboxes I've come across tend to use a Synthetic PAO ISO VG 220 or 320 oil with a very robust EP additive system. There are also specialised gear oils that have a higher saturation point or can tolerate a certain amount of water. You will need to check with a reputable oil supplier.
