Read our primer articles on Oil Analysis and Tribology

We are using from more than 15 years the same turbine mineral oils. So the oil is more than 15 years old. The viscosity is not increase more then 15% of nominal value, and the total acid number is < 0.4mg KOH/gr.
I need to know, this oil is still usable or not?
I heart about the service life of oil (operating life) but I don’t know how long it is for turbine mineral oils.
Please, is anyone to tell me more about this question

Longevity (service life) of turbine oils depends on the application and the management of the oil during its use. We operate several hydroelectric plants with 30+ years old oils, and they are still OK. And yes, makeup oils were added over time, but the amounts and the frequencies of those additions were not sufficient to significantly impact (improve) oil's characteristics.

As a side note, we never ever replaced turbine oil due to its increased viscosity (which is explained by relatively low operation temp). They were condemned because of their viscosity dropped below the condemning limit (due to shear over the years of use). Of course, there is entirely different story for oils used at higher operation temps (steam and gas turbines).
