We are running Spartan Ep150 oil in small planetary gear resucers. They run at 1700 rpm and never get any hotter than 150 F. Why does the oil smell bad (not burnt, just bad)?

Every lab analyst might have better crystal ball than anyone here, of course, after testing this oil.
When we send the oil out for analysis it always comes back as fairly clean (15/14/12 last time) and nothing out of the ordinary to report...
Did you ask them to run a bacteriologic and fungus scan? Bad smell (not burnt, as you say) is usually caused by either bacteria or a fungus spores.
KR there isn't much EP is Spartan EP when compared to an automotave gear oil but your nose might be sensitive enough to pick it up. It's possible the sulfer in the EP package. Although the bulk oil temperature might only see 150F there is localised hot spots where the temperature is much higher and the EP is doing it's job.
