It is dispersant which is responsible for suspension of soots in diesel as well as gasoline engine oils. They are not a pure chemical; complex cemical molecule synthesized out of polybutenes. Viscosity Improvers are not responsible for this action; however VIs can ge grafted with dispersants, are called dispersant viscosity improvers. Again dispersant in the VIs are responsible for soot suspension
