There is no "minimal requirement" for tbn value. The SAE certifications are based on tests done on engines. As long the engine is kept in certain condition by the lubricant, for a certain amount of time, it will get the SAE certificate. So for the tbn, the highest value will allow your oil to last longer (as its deplete over with use. Usualy (if standard diesel fuel is used) the tbn will drop of 2 or 3 units over 250 hours of use. unless a filtration system is used to remove soot from the oil,and allow the oil to last up to 1000 hours, any tbn ranging form 8 to 12 will be more than enough to last 250 hours.

Caterpillar for example, recommend value of aprox 10.5 as "starting" value. Most of the well known companies,supplied CH4 with similat value of 10-11.
Why i confused? because one company offer to me CH4 and the TBN value was only 8.3 and they claimed that it is enought for 400 Hr,
Actually, the Tnbdroped to 6.5 and the TAN jumped to 4.2.
I think your TBN issue is dependent on fuel quality used. If you use high sulphur diesel fuel or bio-type mixtures a higher TBN is required compared to low sulphur, good quality diesel fuel where TBN of 8-9 is suficient.

Why not do some oil sampling on used oil after 300-400 hrs. The TBN value of the used oil is whats most interesting.
