There are a couple of ways to measure girth gear wear. None are simple to do and each requires that you establish a base line. These methods can be used on all open gears at the cement plant including all horizontal mills and the kiln.
1. Measure the chordal thickness using a gear tooth vernier.
2. Use a metal straight edge placed from root to tip and measure the gap between it and the tooth.
Each of these methods needs to be performed an several teeth from several sections or sets of teeth. Measurements should taken at the same places, that is, at the same distances from the tips and from the sides of the teeth and at several places on each tooth. If possible measurements should be taken on the same teeth every time.
