Zinc is commonly found as part of multifunctional additives that improve both the antiwear and antioxidant properties of the lubricant. As David Sim pointed out, there are systems where zinc-containing additives are not appropriate.

Zinc additives can promote deposit-formation when misapplied.

If the application in question requires a non-zinc or reduced-zinc content oil and you are seeing increased zinc levels, you may have a misapplication problem. Do you use both AW (zinc-containing) and non-AW hydraulic oils at your location? Is it posible that a non-AW system was accidentally topped-off with an AW oil?
