motor oil is based on a dbn and tbn level dbn is detergent based net additives and tbn is total base net additives. dbn think laundry detergent in a sense motor oil never goes bad it gets to dirty to lubricate properly so the higher dbn detergent base net # you have the better. the max is 14 now tbn total base net additives if you dont have additives in your oil you have base oil (hopefully parrafin based) and house hold bleach lubricates better than base oil. therfore the higher that level the better the oil. we could go into anti foam agents, dispersants, seal swell additives, and so on but the best motor should have a very high tbn and dbn level but a good balance of the 2 is also imprortant steward enterprise has a 14 dbn and a 14 tbn motor oil which is the top of the chart for motor oil.
