Read our primer articles on Grease Guns and Oil Sight Glasses.

With no oil used to lubricate the compressoin area, the oil is only used to lubricate the gear boxm though small amounts of gas may enter the crankcase due to seal blow-by...

I am trying to determine whether a "Compressor Oil" is acctually necessary, or that a quality gear oil would be a better choice.

With a global market it is much easier to source good quality gear oils than compressor oils (typical is ISO 220)

Hi

You would have to match the lubricants additive package with the type of bearings in use,
the gear lubricant will be more polar than compressor lubricant so would tend to pick up water more than a compressor lubricant would, the high temperature of some compressors could activate a chemical EP package causing chemical wear,
In expensive plant items most likely better to use the correct lubricant because of the reactive EP package in Gear Lubricants.
