Read our primer articles on High Mileage Oil, Synthetic Oil and Kinematic Viscosity

While reading JP magazine a subscriber stated that one of the major performance engine shops in his area stated that they where seeing increased wear and damage to older engines using flat tappet cams due to newer oil formulations containing little to no zinc additives in them since newer engines do not require as heavy an anti-wear package as the older engines did. Has anyone else seen any information on this subject and if true is there an additive product that older engine owners should be using?

For your reading pleasure: https://www.amsoil.com/dealer/...appet.pdf?zo=1181889 . I think it is better to use an oil formulated to protect flat tappet cams, than to play tribologist and use an additive. Hope this helps.
Thanks Tim this was the info I was looking for. It had never occurred to me to question the major band name oils I had been using in my engines. I have always used Pennzoil exclusively but I am in the process of an engine build up which includes a new flat tappet cam, lifters and new higher strength springs. So when I came across the message about oil formulations I felt best if I go to an area visited by persons knowledgeable in lubrication. Once again thanks for the info.
