Read our primer articles on Desiccant Breathers and Oil Filter Carts.

I have sample of used engine oil that i tried to treat with fullers earth in a pilot plant to check the quality, productivity and yield capacity of the oil.

The process that i tried is as follows...

1. Mixed oil with fullers earth.
2. Heat applied till 350 to 380 degree Celsius.
3. Stopped the application of heat and let the oil cool down.
4. Filtered it using some filtration paper.

Now here are the problems that i encountered.

1. The oil started boiling if a lot of heat was applied to it and even came out from the plant itself.
2. After the temperature crosses 130 degrees the oil never boils, Although to achieve that temperature a lot of control on the heating was required which is not possible in the actual plant. (Using Wood generated heat)
3. Even though doing all that and taking the temperature upto 380, the resulting product that came out was dark green in color.

Please anyone help me.

P.S ( The oil was pre heated so had less than 1% of water. And i was told the flsh pint of the used oil was 75 to 80 deg Cel. )

Some observations

1. At 100 Dec C, the oil should become moisture free, unless it has been emulsified.

2. If you say Flash Point is 75 to 80 Deg C then
i. There is fuel dilution, or plenty of volatile matter, typically fuel.
ii. Oil would probably be of fairly low viscosity SAE 5 to 10 ( ISO VG 15 to 32 cSt at 40 C) as such oils would have a Flash of 100 C

3. Any specific reasons you would like to heat oil upto 300 Deg C plus.

Any Hydrocarbon will degenerate and crack at the temperature of about 370 Deg.C.

Heating the oil is not the way an oil has to be re-refined. You have to treat it with an alkali to take away all the acidic particles; treat with an acid to take away all the basic materials; make the oil neutra; filter out all the dust particles and water; remove almost all the aromatics; etc.

This is a complex thing. Why don't you ask some expert in setting up oil re-refining plants to do the work for you ?
